The first weeks of grief, and what nobody warns you about
Grief · 6 min read
Why the days right after a funeral are often harder than the funeral itself, and what actually helps.
The quiet after
During the first week there are calls to make and people in the house. When that stops, grief arrives with the silence. This is normal and it is not a setback.
Grief is physical
Exhaustion, appetite changes, forgetfulness and a tight chest are common. Keep water nearby, eat something small every few hours, and let sleep come when it comes.
What helps
One small task a day. One person who checks in without needing an answer. Writing down the things you keep meaning to say. Nothing here needs to be fixed on a schedule.
